According to many scholars, the book of "Ruth" was originally part of Judges. The opening of the book places it in the time of Judges.

    • Ruth 1:1: Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons." This is a time of apostasy, wafare, decline, violence, moral decay, and anarchy.
    • Ruth 1:20 "Don't call me Naomi, " she told them. "Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. Did the Lord make her life bitter?
    • Ruth 4:17-22: The genealogy concludes that Ruth of Moab is the great-grandmother of King David.
