The Bible Commentary

[C]2006-07 by Richard L Zorek

  • I Sam 1:1: "Now there was a certain man of Ramathimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zeph, and Ephrathite."
  • Americans have fallen into the same trap that the Old Testament Israelites fell into when they asked for "a king to judge us like all the nations" (I Sam 8:5). In short, they looked to civil authority to provide what God said He would provide--their economic sustenance.
  • I Sam 10:9: And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass Also translated, "God changed his whole outlook."

  • II Sam 11:6: And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly The Spirit of the Lord can incite a righteous indignation.
  • 1 Samuel 17:39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.Temptation is the act of tempting or the state of being tempted. In the OT the specific verb indicating the act of tempting is the Piel form nissa. In I Sam. 17:39 the word is used of proving or testing armor
  • I sam 18:12-15: And saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and departed from Saul....and David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him. Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him David's blameless heart struck fear in Saul's heart.
  • I Sam 30:6: "And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." There are times when the only one who can encourage you is the Lord.
