The Bible Commentary

[C]2000-07 by Richard L Zorek

  • 1 Kings 1:2: So his servants said to him, "Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm." The enlisting of a lovely young virgin to nurse the king and lie in his bosom to be warm was a traditional cure prescribed by ancient medicine. Galen, the Greek physician, recommended that the health and heat of a young body could be transferred to that of an aging patient as a medical treatment.
  • I Kings 1:4: And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him, but the king knew her not There as no sexual relationship.
  • I Kings 1:5: "Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him." Adonijah was David's fourth son, born to him in Hebron. His mother was Haggith, one of David's wives whome we know nothing about except that her name means "festive".
  • I kings 2: 3: and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, The dying words of david...."walk in His ways." Very important for him

  • i kings 3:9: Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? He asked for wisdom.
