A prophet of the return of the exiles from Babylon-Persia to the land of Judah. Contemporary with Zechariah.
- Hag 1:1: In the second year of darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying Haggai's name is mentioned nine times in the book. The authorship is virtually uncontested. There are two references to Haggai in Ezra where he is sen working alongside younger propeht Zechariah.
- Hag 1:2: Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the Lord's house should be built." The Israelites gave up building the Lords house--in order to build their own house.
- Hag 1:3: Then came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet, saying The Lord speaks thorugh his prophet. Before it springs off the branch he declares it to them.
- hag 1:4: It is time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? Is it time for you to live in you covered houses while this one lies in waste?
- Hag 1:6: You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it." The people run after material things--houses, land, money--and it just eats up all time and energy.
- Hag 1:9: "You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house. The people wanted it badly and worked hard for it, but because they robbed God to get it, they were not satisfied.
- Hag 1:11: I called for a drought upon (you)...upon all the labour of (your) hands... If you begin to neglect your soul and turn to material things, you will end up joyless and empty.
- Hag 2:8: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts In case you have any questions about who actually owns the precious metals.
- Hag 2:12: If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt to touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, it shall be unclean Being around holy things does not transfer holiness to you.
